Kenya Visa Information

Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) / Post-Visa System

From 1 January 2024 Kenya moved toward an ETA system.

For standard tourist/travel entry instead of traditional visa in some cases.

Requirements vary slightly per category, but typically include:

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity with at least one blank page)

  • Selfie or passport-type photo

  • Contact details (email & phone number)

  • Travel itinerary (arrival & departure)

  • Accommodation booking confirmation

  • Payment method (credit/debit card, etc.)



Types of Visitor / Travel Visas for Kenya 

Single-Entry Visa Usually valid up to 3 months (90 days) from date of issue. For one visit to Kenya for tourism, business, family visit, etc. *This visa can be extended for a further 90 days while you are in the country.

Multiple Entry Visa Valid for 3-12 months from date of issue. Some sources say 6 or 12 months, even up to 1 year. For frequent travellers who will enter Kenya multiple times for business, tourism or other reasons.

Longer Multiple Entry / Multi-Year Visa (e.g., 5-year)

reports of 5-year multiple entry visas. However, official site info is less clear. For individuals who need repeated access over many years.

Transit / East Africa Tourist Visa

Transit: short stay (often up to 72 hours) East Africa Tourist Visa: covers Kenya + Uganda + Rwanda for up to 90 days. For travellers passing through or visiting multiple East African countries.

Residence Permits

Who it is for - main criteria & years required 

Class G permit

For people who want to invest, start / run a business, or engage in trade. It is a permit for investors and entrepreneurs. 
Class D Work Permit

For foreign nationals employed by a specific employer in Kenya; must have skills/qualifications not available locally. It is employer-specific.

Class G Investor/Business Permit

For investors, business owners, consultants or professionals doing trade or consultancy in Kenya. Initial permit is for 1-2 years and is renewable.

Qualifying for permanent residence:

holders of Class G must have legal residence for 7 years, including at least 3 continuous years immediately before applying.

Class K Ordinary Resident Permit

Often used by retirees or foreigners with independent means (e.g. pension, investments outside Kenya). They should have assured income, no intention to work in Kenya.

• Must be at least  35 years old

• Must have an assured annual income of at least USD 24,000 (or equivalent) from sources other than employment, trade, or business in Kenya (e.g. pension, annuity, foreign investments).

• Cannot engage in paid or unpaid employment or run a business in Kenya under this permit.

• Permit is issued for a period of up to 2 years initially and can be renewed.

Permanent Residence Permit

Once someone has held valid work/permit classes, they may apply for permanent residency. Key requirements:

• Must have held valid work permits for at least 7 years

• Must have been continuously resident in Kenya for at least 3 years immediatelybefore the application.

• Applicants may also include spouses and children under the same category (if dependent).
